What kind of music do you like?

I like music. All kinds of music!

I've written previously about Gruvr, where you can find out what bands are performing in your area. If you haven't already checked out Gruvr, you should.

If you like recorded music, there are lots of choices. For me, I really like Playlist.com, a service of MySpace. There is no cost for using playlist, and you don't even have to join MySpace. You do, however, have to set up an account on playlist. My username there is SalineVance, in case you want to add me as a friend there.

So, what kind of music do I like?

In a few words, nearly everything. Seriously!

My tastes run the gamut from the latest alternative rock (think 89X radio in Detroit) to Classical. In fact, my favorites today are posted on playlist, under my "Featured Playlist." My latest favorite is "Rise Above This" by Seether. Very inspirational. When I want to get really keyed up, I turn on "Tears Don't Fall" by Bullet for my Valentine. When the vocals begin with "Let's Go", you can't help but get going! Give it a listen, and you'll find out what I mean.

No matter the music today, in my view, it all starts with the classics.

It wasn't until I became an adult that I developed a taste for the classics. Maybe it was the same for you.

Beethoven was brilliant. The second movement of his Seventh symphony is artistry at work. And to think that he was deaf when he wrote it! The interweaving of the base chords and the melody is true genius, and beautiful. Listen to it once, and you'll be hooked.

On a more modern note, Anton Bruckner wrote a brilliant symphony No. 4. If you've seen the movie "Babe" (the talking pig), you've heard the melody. The entire symphony is about an hour long, and it's mesmerizing. Give it a listen, too.
