Leave a comment » Real Estate questions on the golf courseYou never know when a great question will be asked. While playing golf in my golf league the other evening, a golfer in our foursome asked a really great question. "Does your agency assign you a location or an area to work?" You may have even asked that question yourself. As I answered the question on the golf course, it struck me that a question that profound is worth answering for the benefit of others. "Does your agency assign you a location or an area to work?" The short answer is "no." I am licensed to practice as a real estate salesperson in Michigan - anywhere in Michigan. That's not really practical, though. In my experience since 1994, I have found that most buyers follow a 5-step process for buying a home (I'll expand on items 2-5 in a later article):
Buyers generally know which community they would like to live in, either through direct knowledge, or through their own research, or from the recommendation of family and friends. They will ask me questions about the community, to which I should be able to answer. That's where the practicality of my Michigan real estate license is limited. Here's why: I grew up in Ann Arbor - my parents still live in my childhood home. Since 1985, I have lived in Saline. For most practical purposes, I know the Saline and Ann Arbor communities very well. (You could blindfold me, take me anywhere in Saline or Ann Arbor, remove my blindfold, and I could tell you where we were.) Most questions which a buyer will ask about Saline or Ann Arbor, I can answer without hesitation. Questions like "Where's the nearest grocery store?," or "Where can the kids go sledding in the winter?" It takes local knowledge to answer those questions. So while my license allows me to practice throughout Michigan, I can best serve my clients' interests in Washtenaw County, and especially in Saline and Ann Arbor. Local knowledge is everything! So, to my friend Aaron (on the golf course) - Thank you! Your question was much appreciated. If you're ready to start your search for a Saline home or condo, talk to someone with local knowledge! I'd be happy to meet with you. Just give me a call at (734) 476-2063, or send an e-mail, "Vance (at) SalineMichiganRealEstate (dot) com". You can search for homes and condos in Saline here.
