The Saline area, including Lodi Township, is one of America's Best Places to Live, Work and Play. Ask anyone who lives, works, or owns a business in Saline and they're almost sure to tell you some variation of this thought: "We're a friendly, family-oriented town." In Saline you'll find upscale shops, restaurants, and services - in and around our quaint, intimate downtown and surrounding our clean, safe neighborhoods - while enjoying natural beauty and room to roam on the city's rural edges. About 9,400 people live within Saline's city limits. Another 20,000+ live in outlying areas (including Lodi township - see below) within the Saline Area Schools district, renowned for its excellence. Housing values and household income are well above average for the state and country. Saline is just a short drive from the world-class academic, cultural and sports attractions of Ann Arbor and the University of Michigan. Downtown Detroit is only an hour away. With all Saline has to offer, it's no wonder CNN/Money Magazine once again named the Saline area as one of the country's top 100 "Best Places to Live" out of more than 1,300 cities ranked. Saline enjoys an abundance of Parks, Museums, Walking Paths, Retails shop and businesses that can be enjoyed by all. Downtown Saline has the charm of a small town that continues to change with the passing of each decade. Historic buildings over 100 years old, buildings built in the 1950's and 1960's and the new construction currently underway are the homes to our retail businesses, restaurants, specialty stores and indoor play facilities make Saline a unique downtown shopping district. Special events that include the Farmer's Market, Sports Cars to Saline, the Saline Summerfest, the Harvest of the Arts Oktoberfest, and the Summer Music Series are held in the streets and parking lots in downtown Saline. The events are a coordination effort between the Downtown Merchants Association, the Chamber of Commerce and the City of Saline. Parades play a big role in community involvement for Saline's downtown with the Holiday Parade as the number one downtown event each year for the last 30 plus years. An active volunteer community works with the City, Merchants and charitable organizations to make Saline's downtown a place to work, eat, shop and enjoy. Lodi Township is located to the immediate northwest of the City of Saline. The Township is bordered on the south (approximately) by Saline-Waterworks road, to the east by Maple road, to the north by Scio Church road, and to the west by Parker road. The major paved roads running through the township include Ann Arbor-Saline road (north/south), Wagner road (north/south), Pleasant Lake road (east/west), and Zeeb road (north/south). Most other roads in the township are gravel roads, especially out into the farmlands. It's not uncommon to encounter major farm equipment (Tractors, combines) on the gravel roads, and sometimes even on the major paved roads. As of the 2000 census, there were 5,710 people, 1,960 households, and 1,611 families residing in the township. The racial makeup of the township was 94.24% White, 2.28% African American, 0.32% Native American, 1.40% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 0.26% from other races, and 1.45% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.23% of the population. There were 1,960 households out of which 41.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 73.9% were married couples living together, 6.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 17.8% were non-families. 13.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 4.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.91 and the average family size was 3.22. In the township the population was spread out with 29.4% under the age of 18, 6.0% from 18 to 24, 26.5% from 25 to 44, 29.1% from 45 to 64, and 9.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 97.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 97.2 males. The median income for a household in the township was $88,419, and the median income for a family was $96,233. Males had a median income of $68,667 versus $39,722 for females. The per capita income for the township was $37,516. About 2.8% of families and 3.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 4.1% of those under age 18 and 4.4% of those age 65 or over. Lodi Township is a rural, farm-oriented area, and is the home to many small- and mid-sized farms. There are a couple of really large farms (400+ acres) scattered throughout the township. Most of the undeveloped land in Lodi Township remains that way because the soils do not easily accommodate an on-site sewage disposal system (commonly known as a septic field). The only way for the remaining land to be developed would be with the extension of existing sewer systems (city of Saline, city of Ann Arbor, or Pittsfield Township) into the township. At this time (2008), such a prospect appears unlikely in the near future. There are several larger neighborhoods in Lodi Township, mostly clustered near the border with the city of Saline, with some developments further out into the farmland. Some of the major neighborhoods near the city of Saline include Valleyview, Brookview Highlands, and Travis Pointe. Both the Lone Oak and Diuble Meadows developments are further out to the northwest in the township. I've lived in Lodi Township since 1985, and have served the Township government as a member of the Property Tax Board of Review since 2000. If you're considering relocating to the Saline or Ann Arbor area, you owe it to yourself to explore making your home in Lodi Township. I'd be happy to give you a tour!
