1 comment » Saline Michigan Real Estate - The City of SalineA brief introduction to the City of Saline, MichiganWhen you are considering a Saline home or condo, you'll want to explore all the areas around Saline. The Saline area is one of America's Best Places to Live, Work and Play. Ask anyone who lives, works, or owns a business in Saline (as I have since 1985) and they're almost sure to tell you some variation of this thought: "We're a friendly, family-oriented town." In Saline you'll find upscale shops, restaurants, and services - in and around our quaint, intimate downtown and surrounding our clean, safe neighborhoods - while enjoying natural beauty and room to roam on the city's rural edges. About 9,400 people live within Saline's city limits. Another 20,000+ live in outlying areas (including Lodi township - see below) within the Saline Area Schools district, renowned for its excellence. Housing values and household income are well above average for the state and country. Saline is just a short drive from the world-class academic, cultural and sports attractions of Ann Arbor and the University of Michigan. Downtown Detroit is only an hour away. With all Saline has to offer, it's no wonder CNN/Money Magazine once again named the Saline area as one of the country's top 100 "Best Places to Live" out of more than 1,300 cities ranked. Saline enjoys an abundance of Parks, Museums, Walking Paths, Retails shop and businesses that can be enjoyed by all. Downtown Saline has the charm of a small town that continues to change with the passing of each decade. Historic buildings over 100 years old, buildings built in the 1950's and 1960's and the new construction currently underway are the homes to our retail businesses, restaurants, specialty stores and indoor play facilities make Saline a unique downtown shopping district. Special events that include the Farmer's Market, Sports Cars to Saline, the Saline Summerfest, the Harvest of the Arts Oktoberfest, and the Summer Music Series are held in the streets and parking lots in downtown Saline. The events are a coordination effort between the Downtown Merchants Association, the Chamber of Commerce and the City of Saline. Parades play a big role in community involvement for Saline's downtown with the Holiday Parade as the number one downtown event each year for the last 30 plus years. An active volunteer community works with the City, Merchants and charitable organizations to make Saline's downtown a place to work, eat, shop and enjoy. Schools: The Saline Area Schools offers a challenging and comprehensive curriculum to prepare students for their future, as well as supporting life-long learning for all. The schools are one of the main reasons that my family and I choose to live in the Saline area! Each school offers a common core curriculum based upon the Michigan Curriculum Framework and the new Grade Level Content Expectations (GLCE). Each grade level and department has a set of learner outcomes and expectations for student achievement. The high school curriculum supports Career Pathways for all students.

Golf in Saline: If you enjoy a game of golf, you'll have plenty of choice in the Saline area! Here are primary courses from which you'll be able to choose: Brookside GC - I learned the game here as a pre-teen. Rustic Glen GC - which I play every week in a league. Hickory Sticks GC - You'll think that you're in northern Michigan!
Climate in Saline: Being located in southeast Michigan, Saline has the benefit of being close to the Great Lakes. There's no doubt that the Lakes exert a great deal of influence over our weather. We have absolutely fabulous weather in the spring and fall! In the summer, we can sometimes get a bit humid - but that's why Air Conditioning was invented! In the winter, the warming influence of the Lakes helps to moderate our temperatures. Here's a graph (from the Weather Channel) which shows our annual average temperature cycle.

Parks in Saline: The city of Saline offers some wonderful parks in town. Here's a chart from the city which shows all of them.
A few personal notes about the Saline parks: Tefft park is the home of the Saline Recreation Complex, a wonderful facility! Mill Pond park is the home of the ROMP play structure, which I've written about before. Wilderness park is great for exploring, but bring your bug spray!
Some History of the Saline area: Generations of Native Americans traveled six trails that converged in the area we call Saline. They came to hunt wildlife for themselves and their families. And, they came for salt. Native peoples harvested salt from the salt springs and carried it back to their villages for their own use and for trade. In the 18th century, French voyageurs canoed up the rivers from Lake Erie and left strong evidence that they, too, manufactured salt. They left their mark by naming the local river Saline after a French word for salt. In the 19th century, Europeans settled here. The greatest numbers were English descendants who came from the East, having settled first in New England and New York State, and many others came from Germany. Following the War of 1812, the federal government saw a need for a military road between Detroit and Chicago. A surveyor by the name of Orange Risdon was hired to survey such a road so that in the event of Indian uprisings, the military could move quickly. Risdon liked what he saw in the vicinity of the Saline River and decided to stay. Together with Risdon, early residents named the village Saline. Through the 19th century, a small number of black families made their home in the village and made their living as farmers. 20th century men and their families continued to increase the size of the village until in 1966, it was deemed a city retaining the same name. The Saline Area Historical Society offers much more on Saline history.

Explore! I welcome you to visit the Flickr pool of photos of Saline. It's a great way to experience Saline, with over 350 photos (and growing!) And finally, here's a quick video I shot in downtown Saline, showing what we call the "Four Corners" (the intersection of Ann Arbor street and Michigan avenue - yes, the same Michigan ave. that extends from Detroit to Chicago)
