2 comments » Vance's BookshelfWhat I've been reading lately:Do you enjoy reading? I enjoy reading. At the beginning of 2008, I set a goal of reading 50 pages in a book each day. All of my blog, e-zine, or e-newsletter reading each day doesn't count toward my goal - only books. As of mid-July, my average is 43 pages per day, so I'll have to pick up the pace in the second half of the year! What I've been reading most this year are biographies. It's been said that you learn from your mistakes, but that you become brilliant by learning from the mistakes of others. Since I work in the business of real estate, my interest in past business titans was a natural. An interest in American history just came upon me recently. The year began with a reading of a biography of John Adams. From there, I moved on to biographies of Andrew Carnegie, John D. Rockefeller, J.P. Morgan, Booker T. Washington, Mark Twain, Frederick Douglass, Albert Einstein, Abraham Lincoln, George Washington, W.E.B. DuBois, and Nathanael Greene. At present, I'm reading a biography of Thomas Jefferson, written by Fawn Brodie. We all know that Jefferson was the author of the Declaration of Independence. But most of us generally don't know the background behind his writing of the Declaration. Brodie writes: Return to Philadelphia brought a sense of rebirth. "I have been so long out of the political world," Jefferson wrote to John Page on May 17, "that I am almost a new man in it." The six weeks after his return from Monticello saw a phenomenal burst of productivity, the most spectacular in Jefferson's life. Between May 17 and June 28, 1776, he wrote his two most famous political documents, the constitution for Virginia, and the Declaration of Independence. Gone was his lethargy, gone forever his misgivings about the Revolution, and in this light his phrase, "I am almost a new man" takes on a special significance. Jefferson was a fascinating man living in fascinating times. Perhaps our country is now at a crossroads and in need of a fresh perspective in Washington? Comment from: Gerry Davidson [Visitor] Hi Vance, Gerry Davidson here. Another avid reader and English major from the University of NC. Speaking of biographies, I'm in the midst of a biography of Winston Churchill, The Last Lion, by William Manchester. Fascinating on the heels of a biography of Consuelo Vanderbilt who was married to the 9th Duke of Marlborough, Churchill's first cousin. Good to find another real estate bibliophile. Thanks for your other recommendations. Gerry Comment from: Vance Shutes [Member] Gerry, Thanks for visiting! Likewise, I'm glad for the recommendation about Churchill. Each time I read a biography, I make note of the other fascinating people in the subject's life, and search out their biographies. It helps to piece together their world, and gives us a better understanding of the interplay between people in our own lives.
