Leave a comment » Vance's BookshelfWhat have you read lately?Since my last "bookshelf" report, I've read some more great books. What I'd like to do today is to present some of the things I've learned from these books. In most cases, I've taken direct quotes from the books, as there is no way to paraphrase brilliance. My recent books have been the biography of Alexander Hamilton, our first Secretary of the Treasury (and the face of the $20 bill), and the Federalist Papers, a compilation of works by Hamilton, James Madison (our fourth President), and John Jay. Today, though, I have only a quote from the Hamilton biography.
Hamilton (Daniel Chernow) As Hamilton later philosophized in another context, "Tis only to consult our own hearts to be convinced that nations like individuals revolt at the idea of being guided by external compulsions." P. 12
My take of this direct quote from Hamilton is as follows: During the Revolution against Britain, the country was united (except for the "Tories") in their dissatisfaction with British rule. Hamilton was able to capture the essence of his own feelings, which echoed the feelings of most of his fellow countrymen. In today's context, having just gone through the elections, we need only "consult our own hearts" to know our best voting choice! So there you have it - my selected excerpts of passages from the books which I have read recently.
