2 comments » Vance's BookshelfWhat have you read lately?Since my last "bookshelf" report, I've read some more great books. What I'd like to do today is to present some of the things I've learned from the most recent book I've read - The Slight Edge, by Jeff Olson. The sub-title of The Slight Edge is "Secret to a $uccessful Life," which is true in many ways. A wealthy many offered his two sons a choice - a million dollars now, or a penny, doubled every day for a month. One son took the million, the other took the penny. After the first month, the first son had blown much of his million, while the second son had $10,737,418 - the value of a penny doubled every day for a month. The point of the story is the incredible power of compounding interest. While the story pertains to money, the same principle applies with nearly any aspect of our lives - health, knowledge, financial. There are little actions we can take, or not. Will it kill us if we don't take those little (slight) actions? No, not today - although the lack of those actions, over a lifetime, will likely end up killing us before our time. But if we take those slight actions, every day, the incredible power of compounding will bring us riches. I've written before about my diet. Over four years ago, I realized that I had to make some changes in my lifestyle. Little did I know that I was applying the principles of The Slight Edge at the time. A few slight changes in my diet, and the dedication of working out at least four mornings each week, has brought incredible results in my life over those four years. Here's a statement of wisdom from the book: The only reliable, consistent way to control your attitudes - that control your actions, which control your results - is to control your thoughts. And the source of your thoughts is your philosophy. Your philosophy is your paradigm, your view of the way life is. Your philosophy is the source of your failure or success. The Slight Edge will either promote you or expose you for who and what you really are - and who and what you are comes from your philosophy. If you've read my previous bookshelf reports here, you know that I had set a goal of reading 50 pages each day this year. While I've fallen short of that goal - averaging 42 pages per day so far this year - I have learned so much this year. And what has it cost me to learn this much? I can read those 42 pages in about a half-hour each day. Sometimes that reading is done first thing in the morning, sometimes at bedtime, but I'm dedicated to get that reading done. It's another slight edge principle at work in my life, and it's because I wanted to make a change in my philosophy - the source of my thoughts. How about you? Comment from: Dennis Fassett [Visitor] 42 pages a day Vance is impressive. And your point about controlling your thoughts is a good one - reading every day is a good way to keep your thoughts calibrated. Comment from: Vance Shutes [Member] Dennis, Thanks for visiting, and your comment! Yes, reading great books provides a constant flow of ideas - ideas which help us daily in both our business and personal lives. The more history that I read, the more I understand the old saying "Those who are ignorant of history are doomed to repeat it!" Be well these Holidays, my friend!
